Over the past three years I’ve had the pleasure of listening to the performance exams of the students of the Musikhochschule Luzern as they reach the graduation stage of their studies. Although I’m there to listen to them in the capacity of an external adjudicator, it has to be said that the standard of playing by these young musicians is so high, and the music they play so engaging, that it becomes easy for me to forget that I’m there in the role of examiner rather than as a simple listener who is having a really good time - a simple pleasure derived from the great music that they play. Due to the very thorough nature of the jazz education system today, students coming through this system all over the world are of a technically very high level by the time they reach the final year of their studies. The students of the Musikhochschule are no exception to this, their playing without exception being of an invariably high technical standard. But what sets them apart in my experience is that these young musicians have such an extraordinary maturity of musical conception at this point in their musical lives. One after another they produce music that is by turns varied, intelligent, engaging, exciting, thoughtful and very creative. Year after year I’m amazed by the sheer variety of styles and modes of expression that these young musicians can call upon with ease, and by the imagination that they bring to their own performances as well as the organization of their ensembles. The CD which you now hold in your hands, and which features seven of outstanding young graduates of the Musikhochschule Luzern, is a representative sample of the heights of achievement that are reached by these musicians. And it is also representative of the great stylistic variety of music that is put at the service of their creative imaginations. At the 2007 exams I attended over 30 performances by different student groups and, high level as they all were, I can still easily recall the performances by the musicians whose music is represented on this recording – Tonee Schiavano´s effortless control of his ensemble and his instrument as he lead them through a programme of attractive Brazilian influenced music, Ran Wehrli´s muscular creativity on his instrument and the infectious exuberance with which he lead the group, and the extraordinary virtuosity of André Pousaz´s bass playing, making the listener marvel at how one so young could possibly assimilate so much musical information and put it at the service of the music like that. And then there was Andy Mötz who lead both a pared down ensemble of guitar trombone and drums, and a larger group that showed the benefits of his visit to Spain to study flamenco music - both ensembles driven by his imaginative and powerful drumming, while Christoph Müller showed another side of the drummer´s art and the benefits of long association with sympathetic musicians as he played a riveting piano trio set with Urs Bollhalder and Rafael Bossard. And finally to complete the picture of the vast breadth of musical expression chosen by these great young players, there was the effortless fluidity and dark lyricism of Dave Gisler´s guitar playing and composing for quartet, and the extraordinary imagination and sheer hard work demonstrated by Sarah Buchi´s use of the Indian music techniques she learned on a sojourn there, returning to Switzerland and putting this information at the service of some really original music. Seven musicians, seven completely different yet original approaches to the playing of improvised music. In a world where conformity of thought and approach is demanded by a technologically driven economy, it is comforting to listen to this demonstration of imagination, creativity and artistry - a demonstration of the great work done at the Musikhochschule Luzern in fostering the talents of their students, and a demonstration of the students´ ability and desire to further the development of this great tradition of jazz and improvised music - the “sound of surprise”.
